velux on condensation and skylights

Read Now

Condensation is usually more noticeable on skylights because warm, moist air rises to the ceiling. The cause of condensation is not typically from skylights, though. It is due to the excess moisture in the air. Using a dehumidifier and providing adequate ventilation in your home can go a long way in preventing condensation.
Sometimes condensation can appear as a leak when it hasn’t been treated properly. This occurs when there is a rough opening in the unit that is not properly insulated from the outside cooler air. This allows warm, moist air to escape from the room and come into contact with the underside of the flashing and/or cladding. Having the roofer or installer add felt and insulation between the frame and rough opening should prevent this problem.
Condensation in one spot may be a sign that your home is retaining too much moisture in another area.

You might be wondering what causes the excess moisture resulting in condensation. Air naturally contains water vapor and we contribute to that with basic human functions: breathing, perspiring, cooking, cleaning and showering. Condensation occurs more frequently in the winter because there is a more drastic difference in temperature from the warmth inside your home to the very cold outdoors.
Picture
Here are a few ways to prevent excess moisture. Install double-paned insulated windows and doors with energy efficient Low-E glazings that help keep interior glass panes warmer. Or double-pane your current windows by adding exterior storm panels. Install vents below windows to help warm the interior glass. Take shorter showers to reduce the indoor moisture. Cook with lids on your pots to reduce the moisture that is put into the air. Run ceiling fans to keep warm air from rising to the ceiling to help prevent condensation on roof windows and skylights. If your basement is concrete, provide drainage where ground water could be building up. Run a dehumidifier during winter months and damp weather.
Picture
Newer technology means that VELUX skylights are better insulated and create less condensation than older skylights. If you are noticing excess condensation on your older skylights, let us help you keep your home dry and healthy with new VELUX skylights!

March Spring Cleaning

Picture

Over the winter, leaves and debris can accumulate on your roof and gutters.

Most people know that they should clean out their gutters in the spring and fall, but you should also clean in your roof eaves, and around chimneys, pipes, solar attic fans, tube skylights and skylights: Basically anything that has a flashing connected to your roof. Flat roofs have drains in them that should also be cleared.
Having a roof that is clean of debris helps to make sure that water is properly running off of your roof and not collecting in "leaf dams" that may cause water to slip under your shingles or tiles.

If you have solar panels on your roof, either an array, or those on our solar attic fans, or solar operable skylights, we recommend that they be cleaned at least once a year for optimal function.

If you are not able to get on your roof, Naturalight Solar can help you keep your skylights, sun tunnels, and roof flashings clean! Call us today to ask about how we can help keep your roof healthy and leak free!

Clean, Quiet & Safe Glass

The name says it all: it’s cleaner, quieter, and safer than any skylight glass on the market today.
Clean
Clean, Quiet & Safe Glass is made with silicon dioxide, making it much smoother than ordinary glass so water disperses evenly to evaporate quickly and reduce water spotting.

Quiet
It reduces up to 25% more of unwanted outside noise than standard double pane glass and up to 50% more than plastic skylights.

Safe
Since Clean, Quiet & Safe Glass is a laminated glass, it’s safe and compliant with all building codes for out-of-reach applications.

What is a roof pitch?

Read Now

The roof pitch is defined as the angle of the roof, and it’s calculated by the number of inches it rises vertically for every 12” it extends horizontally. This angle is measured by placing a pitch-gauge directly on the roof and taking an accurate reading.
The calculation is important because each of VELUX’s skylights and flashing kits are engineered with specific pitch requirements that match a range of roof slopes in order to effectively drain water off of the skylight.
Picture
Roof pitch and material not only affect what VELUX product you should install, but it also affects how it can be installed. Roofs that are very steep, slippery or delicate (such as slate or metal) mean that your installer has to take extra care when moving your skylights off and on the roof, needs to set up additional safety equipment, needs to set up additional equipment to protect your roof, and may need extra people on the job site to help. Naturalight Solar Inc. is knowledgeable about most roofing materials for skylight projects, and will be able to determine the correct application for your project.

Call us at 707-527-5330 to talk about what VELUX product is best for your roof!

VELUX LAUNCHES FLAME-RESISTANT SKYLIGHT

The TZR and TZRL Wildfire Glass Curb-Mount Sun Tunnel Skylight is made to meet wildland-urban interface area code requirements.

Picture
VELUX has created a new Sun Tunnel skylight series to meet expanded wildland-urban interface (WUI) zone and Class A burning brand code requirements. The TZR and TZRL Wildfire Glass Curb-Mount Sun Tunnel Skylights achieve high-level fire resistance with flame-resistant construction and ignition-resistant tempered diamond wire glass in the standard pane.
According to VELUX, about 44 million homes, or one-third of all homes in the country, are located in WUI zones, where residential development meets undeveloped wildlands prone to fires. “The ignition-resistant wire glass on the new Sun Tunnel is designed to prevent the glass from dropping to the floor and igniting a fire inside the home,” says Ross Vandermark, director of national product management for VELUX North America. “It is a prime option for homes in WUI zones as flame-resistant construction can help preserve property."
The new Sun Tunnels incorporate a 14-inch fixed curb-mounted skylight with an adapter for a standard 14-inch reflective aluminum tunnel. The TZR 014 model is designed for tile roofs and does not include a flashing kit. (An ECW high-profile tile flashing kit is available separately.) The TZRL 014 is made for shingle roofs and includes a shingle roof flashing kit and adhesive underlayment.
Both models include 64 inches of tunnel material, two 12-inch, 45-degree elbows, and a 16-inch top collar.

Warning: 5 Things You Should Consider Before Installing a Skylight

Read Now

Picture
From brilliant rays of sunlight to fresh flowing clean air, skylights give consumers a new way of renovating their home and business.
But.
Skylights are also infamously known by the building industry as the one product that causes a nightmare of a repair job. But, do they really?
When considering adding a skylight to your project, there are a couple of misconceptions floating around that you should be aware of—particularly when working with VELUX skylights.

1. They all leak

Since the beginning of time, you couldn't say the word "skylight" without the word "leak" somewhere in the sentence. And unfortunately, the notion that skylights leak is still heavily talked about in the industry.
Okay, we'll admit it.
At one time, old bubble dome skylights were prone to leaks. Without proper water protection, water was able to easily seep into the house through the flashing. And because of the massive repair bills and clean-ups needed to fix the leaking skylight, people remain leery of installing a skylight.
Yes, old skylights leaked. But hear me out. VELUX Skylights do not.
VELUX Skylights are known to be "The No Leak Skylight" for a reason. All of our skylights come with three layers of water protection:
Picture
Plus, our skylights come with a 10-year installation warranty, 20-year glass warranty, 10-year product warranty, and 5-year warranty on blinds and controls.
So, on the very rare chance something happens, there's a warranty.

2. they'll break during a storm

Storms can quickly turn nasty, causing all sorts of damage to surrounding vegetation and buildings. One of the warnings many roofers give out is that having a skylight on your roof is dangerous, especially in high storm areas because they'll break.
So, let's confront the most common weather element that many believe break skylights: Hail.
Our sister company in Australia decided to put a VELUX skylight under the gun (literally) and fire hail stones at the skylight's weakest points.
Watch what happened:

If VELUX skylights can survive the weather in Australia...well, let's just say they can survive anywhere. But, if hail does damage a VELUX skylight, VELUX offers a hail warranty on skylights with Clean, Quiet, and Safe glass.

3. they cause energy loss

Skylights contribute to a lot of free light throughout the house, even in harder-to-reach areas where vertical windows won't fit.
All great and wonderful for saving on electric bills...unless of course, all that heat and air go right through the skylight.
Understanding the energy performance ratings of skylights is important in picking the right application for your area. VELUX skylights hold the energy-efficient label of ENERGY STAR®. And between our Low-E glass and light filtering blinds, VELUX skylights can help reduce the heat coming or leaving a home.
You can view more of our testing data here.

4. they'll damage furniture and overexpose the home to uv

Leave furniture in the light long enough and it will start to fade from the sun. Or, sit under the sun too long and you'll get overheated. Or, you'll get a glare from the sun. Or, the sun will cause the space to get too hot. So to avoid all that, don't install a skylight.
Alright, we get that. So we created VELUX skylights that block out 95% to 99% of UV rays. And with a wide selection of blinds to choose from—blackout to light filtering—customers can decide when and how much of the light to let in.
The notion that skylights contribute to overexposure just doesn't ring true anymore in newer skylights.

5. they're a money pit

Just like any renovations to a home, adding skylights aren't expense-free. But because some of VELUX skylights contribute to decreasing energy dependency by using solar energy, a 26% tax credit could apply to both the product and installation.
For you as a contractor though, skylights are a quick way to make an extra profit without your customer having to spend too much money.
Save time and money by adding in a skylight anytime you go to reroof a house. And be sure to check out our VELUX Solar-Powered "Fresh Air" Skylight and the VELUX Energy Performance Model skylights for that 26% tax credit.
So, sure, skylights in the old days had their problems. But is it too much to ask for us to get a second-chance? When you choose VELUX skylights, you won't be disappointed in the quality and reliability of the product. Promise!

skip the winter doldrums

Read Now

It’s happened. We all set our clocks back an hour this past Sunday and now we are facing the dwindling daylight hours.

As the days grow shorter and the sun moves lower in the sky towards winter, you may find the light inside your home growing dimmer even during the day.
Lack of sunlight is the number one contributor to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and so you’re most likely to experience it in the winter. Adding more artificial lighting will help ease eyestrain, but it will not lift your mood.
Install VELUX Sun Tunnel Skylights now, before you become lost in the doldrums of winter. They will both increase the natural light in your home and lift your mood.
Skip the winter doldrums and get your sunlight before it’s gone!
